In the 17th century, wealthy people commissioned artists to create small portable portraits. Portraits of family. Portraits of family members getting married, the birth of a child or a portrait commemorating the death of a person. or a portrait commemorating the death of a person. These small portraits could easily be carried along on a journey.

This is a series of portraits of my immediate family, portrayed with their spouse on the reverse. The portraits of parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters and their sons and daughters turn the medal into a genealogical document. The depiction of my family resemble portrait images found on Roman coins. Also then, entire families of Roman emperors and notables were depicted on coins. These portraits traveled throughout the Roman Empire as currency.

My family is from the working class. They would never be depicted on coins or miniature portraits. Certainly no portrait paintings of my family would have been made. Only an artist in the family can ensure the eternity of their existence.
